Who actually invented the skateboard?
Skateboarding’s history is a mystery!
Several people were drawn to the same idea of simultaneously rolling down the street on a board – no one knows who made it happen first. But we know that Skateboarding was born in LA!
Surfing might have been popular, but the surf shop owner had a different idea – to use the ‘downtime’ to create a brand new board sport.
Who is the first ever skateboard?
In conjunction with the Chicago Roller Skate Company, Bill Richard attached skate wheels to wooden boards, and Skateboarding was born!
The name ‘sidewalk surfing’ was put on it, as early skaters looked just like surfers – performing tricks and maneuvers without shoes! What an inspired idea it turned out to be.
Surfing wasn’t just limited to the waves – it was taken to the streets in the 1960s with the help of skateboard manufacturers!
Jack, Kips’, Hobie, Bing, and Makaha all created boards that resembled surfboards and assembled teams to promote them.
One of these teams, headed by Larry Stevenson from Makaha, even had an exhibition at Pier Avenue Junior High School in Hermosa Beach!
It was a groundbreaking moment that forever changed the skateboarding culture.
That’s why many people credited Larry Stevenson for starting it all:
For some, he is the innovator behind the skateboard and even patented the double kicktail.
Not only that, but he had his very own skate team and was responsible for organizing the first-ever skateboarding contest – truly a pioneer of the sport!
I’m not sure if he is the actual inventor of the skateboard, but one thing is for sure:
Skateboarding wouldn’t be what it is today without him.
Is the person who invented the skateboard alive?
Unfortunately, the person today credited as the inventor of the skateboard, Larry Stevenson, is not alive.
He died at the age of 81 in 2012.
However, the legacy of Skateboarding’s origins continues to live on through the people and brands that keep it going today.
The culture has come long since wooden boxes and roller skates – from street skating to vert ramps, big air competitions, and even Olympic-level events.
The skateboarding community is ever-evolving, and it’s all thanks to the vision of those early innovators!

It’s no surprise that Skateboarding has become such an enduring part of our culture – it all started with a simple idea, some roller skates, and a wooden box!
Was skateboarding ever considered a crime?
No, Skateboarding has never been considered a crime. However, even today, you must notice where you are skating and know the local rules.
In the past, society often frowned upon skateboarding as people associated it with troublemakers and hooligans.
Norway took it more seriously by forbidding it for 11 years from 1970 to 1980 – can you believe it?
But today, Skateboarding is a recognized sport that is even included in the Olympics.
It has come a long way since its beginnings, and we have those early innovators to thank for it.
Thankfully, attitudes have changed recently, mainly due to skateboarders’ efforts to make the sport more accepted in mainstream culture until, eventually, most cities across the globe embraced skateboarding and considered it a legitimate sport.
So don’t worry if you’re out skating – it’s legal! However, check your local rules – some property owners might not want you to skate on their property.
I always recommend skating only in designated areas or public places and staying safe while you’re at it!
